Bill Gates invests millions in farmland

2 October 2018 - Wouter Baan - 2 comments

Bill Gates, the founder of software giant Microsoft, has invested $171 million in US farmland. It is the most expensive farmland transaction this year in the United States.

The deal concerns 14.500 acres (over 5.800 hectares) in southern Washington state, which borders Canada. The transaction is divided into 10.500 acres of irrigated farmland and 3.900 acres of grassland. It is not yet known what Gates will do with the land. The Microsoft founder is also known to own thousands of acres of farmland in the states of Georgia and Florida.

Popular investment
Farmland has been a popular investment property for several American millionaires in recent years. They sometimes earn hundreds of thousands of dollars in agricultural subsidies each year with the land. This is much to the chagrin of some American farmers and citizens.

They believe that the subsidies do not belong to millionaires. Bill Gates is the second richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $1 billion.

America and agricultural subsidies? I thought America was against subsidies and for free trade.

Farmers in the US are not worse off than in the EU, the Farmbill provides a lot of guarantees, crop insurance is also much better regulated than in the EU and certainly better than in the Netherlands.
