Brazilian mega company up for sale

14 November 2018 - Niels van der Boom

One of the largest agricultural companies in Brazil has entered the market. For about €928 million you own 135.000 hectares, 90.000 head of cattle, 220 tractors and a complete village for 400 employees.

According to the broker, it is one of the largest agricultural companies in the country, called Nova Piratininga. The main location is in the municipality of São Miguel do Araguaia, which is in the state of Goiás. The state is located in the center of the country, east of the large agricultural states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

Beef cattle and arable farming
The asking price for the company is 4 billion Brazilian real, which translates to about €928 million. That is certainly €6.874 per hectare, because the total area is 135.000 hectares. Of this, 87.750 hectares is arable land and grassland. The rest is nature. In addition, the prize also includes 90.000 head of young stock and beef cattle.

As you might expect, there is an entire village of residents to run the business. In total there are 400 employees and 250 houses. There is also an office, canteen, school, weighbridge and its own modest airport with space for a few jets. Do you want to relax after a day of managing? Then there are 8 country houses spread over the estate.

The asking price also includes the entire inventory of the company, which will be housed in 1,8 hectares of machine shed. There are 220 wheel tractors, 20 pick-up trucks, 20 trucks and 5 shovels to name a few.

Investors
For those who prefer a smaller company, the same broker also has livestock farms with 142.600 hectares or 78.000 hectares on offer. Nova Piratininga is owned by 3 Brazilian investors united in the MJW Group. They bought the company in 2010 for 310 million Brazilian real.

Substantial investments were subsequently made, especially in improving the livestock. In 2015, the owners announced in an interview that the company was not for sale. Why this is now the case has not been disclosed.

Market for mega companies
It is not the largest company worldwide to be put up for sale this year. In July a company with more than 200.000 hectares came to the market† In February, the largest arable farm in Europe sold, with 57.000 hectares in Romania. They are all mega-enterprises, but this pales in comparison to the largest agricultural company in the world. In 2015, an Australian Company with 11 million hectares on the market.
