Arabs buy 200.000 hectares in Australia

10 April 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 9 comments

One of the largest grain farmers in Australia has sold his 200.000 hectare business to a group of Arabs. This deal is worth approximately €40 million. It means that the Arabs are buying a large area again, although this is the first time in Australia.

John Nicoletti has his mega arable farm sold in Australia. It concerns 200.000 hectares of land, including 40.000 sheep. The entrepreneur is selling the farm and will focus entirely on his dealership for John Deere. The buyer of the company is SALIC, an investment company from Saudi Arabia. This company buys up farms worldwide in order to guarantee food security in Saudi Arabia.

Closed market
This acquisition is one of the largest land deals in Australia ever. It is striking, however, that the arable farm has been bought by investors from outside Australia. The country is mainly known for the fact that it is (very) difficult for foreigners to purchase land.

Arabs investing in recent years much in agricultural land, so they hope to be less dependent on food from other countries. After several purchases in Africa, Latin America and Europe, it seems it is now Australia's turn.

There are farmers who do not see the point in covering their arable land with solar panels. So, despite all the nice words, it's only about the money, a lot of money.
How long would it take for your neighbor to be an arab farmer? And how do we view that? Or does it not matter as long as it makes as much money as possible?

I don't think it's that much money. This amounts to 200 euros per hectare and then a sheep gift for every 5 hectares.
Henk 10 April 2019
That's €200/ha. That's not much....

good photo too...

5 years ago it was 5 euros, without sheep and THAT was too much!

If you had bought then and sold now, you still make a good return on your investment.

What would that land be worth? Perhaps that amount is still too much.

in July 2018 Niels already wrote about this company on BB:

It is the largest contiguous company ever put up for sale in Australia. This concerns 76.000 hectares owned and 127.000 hectares leased; mainly arable land, spread over 30 companies in 9 municipalities. The asking price is between 75 million and 85 million Australian dollars, converted €47,4 million to €53,7 million.

So the purchase price doesn't say much, because almost 2/3 is leased land
