Land prices in France have remained stable, although prices vary considerably between arable land and grassland. According to new figures from Safer. It is also clear from these figures that a large area is withdrawn from agriculture every year.
The French land price in 2018 averaged just under €6.000 per hectare, which means that the price is virtually stable compared to last year. In the 2 years before that, it had fallen again. This stabilization is due to low incomes in the agricultural sector and low interest rates in the country, Safer reports.
Arable land versus grassland
On the other hand, there are clearly visible differences between the prices for arable land and grassland. The price of arable land has risen to €7.540 per hectare, which is a plus of 1,8%. However, the price for grassland shows a decrease of 2%, bringing the average price to €4.580 per hectare. In fact, the grassland area is decreasing because part of that area is converted into arable land.
Prices also vary greatly by region. Land prices are highest in the north (Normandy to Belgium). The price often exceeds €8.000 per hectare. In Nord-Pas-de-Calais you pay about €1 for 13.000 hectare. In the extreme south of France, prices are also higher than the average. However, in the regions in between, the price is on average €5.000 per hectare.
Strong decrease in acreage
Every year about 55.000 hectares of agricultural land disappear in France, resulting in the loss of approximately 40 to 4 million hectares of agricultural land in 5 years. As a result, there is a growing awareness that the area of agricultural land protected must be.
