A tulip bulb company from the Netherlands has bought 162 hectares of land in Mabel Bush (in New Zealand). The deal is worth around €4,5 million.
It concerns the company 'Horizon Flowers New Zealand', which is one of the largest Dutch tulip farmers in New Zealand. In April, the company received government approval to buy a 162-hectare dairy farm in the southernmost tip of New Zealand, reports Rural Life.
With the purchase, the bulb area of Horizon Flowers New Zealand can be increased by 80 hectares. Incidentally, a rotation of 1 to 6 is maintained on the farm. The rest of the land will be leased back to the seller. In addition, the purchase gives the company additional access to irrigation and additional storage capacity.
More big bulb farmers
More Dutch bulb companies can be found in the southernmost tip of New Zealand. The 5 largest companies together own approximately 350 hectares and export approximately 175 million tulip bulbs per year. The bulbs in the region are harvested in January/February, and are then exported to the northern hemisphere. Prices are higher there during that period, because of the winter season.
