The province of Noord-Holland has designated 500 hectares of leased land as 'nature', which means that tenants must treat this land as mainly natural land instead of agricultural land. With this, the province hopes to give the completion of the Netherlands Nature Network an extra push.
De leased lands that have now been given this stamp were already in the Netherlands Nature Network. This means that additional rules already apply. For example, the tenants mow the grass later so as not to disturb the nests of meadow birds. Now that the stamp 'nature' has been given, the type of fertilization must also be taken into account and the number of animals will decrease. In short: tenants manage the land as natural land, with shared agricultural use.
First 300 hectares, later another 200 hectares
Initially, 300 of the 500 hectares in total will be released, with public subscription from mid-October. The remaining 200 hectares will be released over the next few years when these contracts expire. The province uses 3 criteria when allocating the land and gives points for this. In addition, the bid, the distance between the bidder and the plot and the certificates that indicate sustainable business operations are also examined.
