Arla calls for cooperation

Peasant noise needed to make Brexit a success

Both agricultural entrepreneurs and the food industry would do well to join forces and let one voice be heard in the Brexit negotiations. This call comes from Arla, which plays a major role in the British dairy sector. 'There are opportunities, but also threats.'

Both exciting and scary

Tomas Pietrangeli, CEO of the Scandinavian dairy cooperative Arla, has roughly thought of how the sector can best deal with Brexit. He pointed out why it is both 'exciting and frightening', but that the sector must arm itself 'against the threats and seize the opportunities'.

Nevertheless, the Arla CEO also points out that there is no doubt that Brexit entails uncertainty. "We are optimistic about the future of the industry, but it could also do serious damage if farmers and food producers are not involved in the negotiations."

'With every new market for dairy, there are concerns about access to markets closer to home. Against every call to renew European agricultural policy, there are concerns about what will happen with support for agricultural entrepreneurs.'

Pietrangeli is happy with the start that has already been made. “I am proud to add Arla's voice to the largest coalition of food producers and farmers' organizations. A letter has already been drawn up from the coalition when it is emphasized that it is necessary that the sector retains access to the free movement of labor and goods after Brexit.'

The dairy sector has found a good partner in the British government to maintain access to foreign markets. “Any development in the industry is ultimately good for Arla and its members. There is no time for standing still. Especially now that there are signs that dairy prices are picking up.' Ultimately, the involvement of the sector in the consultation will determine the consequences of Brexit. 'We have to prepare for the opportunities and the challenges.'

The British milk price has been dictated by British supermarkets in recent years, these prices have been downright bad.
