Growth rate of organic dairy cattle equal to conventional

Not only conventional Dutch dairy farming is succeeding in expanding, organic dairy farmers are also growing steadily. Statistics Netherlands even calculated that these sectors maintain the same pace in terms of growth. Almost 2 percent of the Dutch cattle herd in 2016 was organic.

Organic dairy farming has grown by more than 2011 percent between 2016 and 50. This results in a total of almost 70 thousand animals, which means that in 2016 almost 2 percent of the cattle herd was organic. It is known that many companies are still in transition, which means that the share of organic will continue to increase.  

More organic cattle also means more organic grassland. That grows to almost 10 percent of the Dutch acreage. After poultry, cattle farming has recorded the largest growth in the organic segment.  

Cor Pierik, of CBS, indicates that the figures paint the picture that organic dairy farming is keeping up with the conventional sector in terms of growth. Meanwhile, outside the Netherlands, the importance of GMO-free and omega 3 continues to increase. Which in turn creates opportunities for this branch of sport in dairy farming.
