FrieslandCampina receives millions for Pakistan

7 February 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 13 comments

FrieslandCampina will receive 145 million dollars to invest in the dairy sector in Pakistan. With that money, the dairy can also take a 51 percent share in one of the largest processors in Pakistan: Engro Foods. The loan comes from part of the World Bank.

Important growing market

During a meeting between Roelof Joosten, CEO of FrieslandCampina and the Prime Minister in Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, the opportunities in the dairy sector were discussed. In total, the IFC is providing a financing package of USD 145 million.

The reason the IFC is providing such a large amount is that they expect 200.000 farmers and 270.000 surrounding parties to benefit from the acquisition of Engro. 'Which could also create another 1.000 new jobs in dairy processing.'

In addition to the 145 million dollars, FrieslandCampina will also receive another 45 million from the Dutch Financing Company for Developing Countries. "Pakistan is an important emerging market, supported by one of the largest and fastest-growing middle classes in size." Joosten indicates that FrieslandCampina helps to increase food security, stimulate more sustainable production and improve the living standard of dairy farmers.

Pakistan is the number 3 dairy consumer in the world, producing 38 billion liters of milk annually. It is an attractive market for FrieslandCampina mainly because urbanization is increasing, the size of the middle class is growing and there is an increasing switch from loose dairy to packaged product.

It seems to me that FRC lets money speak and turns its head away from corruption, persecution of Christians and sharia lends a hand. For many Pakistanis, their faith is more important than the money. Of course it's great that almost a 1/2 million rural people are being given a chance. But it must have been a dilemma for (members of) the board. The management thought it was better that way. The WB contribution cannot be regarded as moral approval. They don't care much for morals.

I agree with Jan. Sad that for monetary gain is chosen and invested in a country that violates human rights. Shouldn't you want to....

We don't have to be more Catholic than the Pope
There is something to note everywhere
If you don't do anything you won't help the people there
Nothing wrong with that.
Nothing
According to the 7 February 2017
It is good for Pakistani dairy farmers, so Dutch exports of dairy products will increase in the future.

I think the headline of the article is a bit wrong. It should actually say: Friesland Campina is lending another 200 million for Pakistan. They are well on their way to a billion euros. Who gets the damage to his pants when things go wrong in this dangerous country? The Muslims no longer wanted to pull the cart themselves ...... While they are quite capable of doing so.

and also no meadow milk I think, there is no grass there, everything inside and we Dutch have to do them outside!
Henk 8 February 2017
No, there should be food on the shelf. So no whining about phosphate rights, grazing, etc.

I thought Friesland Campina still has something to do at home, or are the members going to sponsor a driver's hobby again on the members' backs. This looks suspiciously like the blunders of the WMD in Indonesia and Avebe in China a few years ago back. First pay a decent milk price to your members.

Oh yes, and make cooperative directors jointly and severally liable for foreign investments.
geert 15 February 2017
It is a form of development aid, RFC gets money for improvements in knowledge of good milk processing in Pakistan, you help a country move forward with that
SG 15 February 2017
Good move. Good for Pakistan, good for RFC's competitive position and therefore also good for Dutch farmers.

Good for the Dutch farmer?, that remains to be seen. In the meantime, we do support a country where human rights are being violated.
Is this what FC means by sustainable?
