In the first weeks of 2017, the slaughter figure was already well ahead of other years and that picture corresponds with the stories that slaughterhouses tell. They speak an unprecedented influx. The slaughter figure for week 8 writes , probably a provisional record.
Since the LU scheme only officially came into effect on March 1 (week 9), it is logical to expect that many dairy cows will be taken to slaughter in the coming weeks. It is therefore expected that the slaughter figure will continue to record high numbers in the coming weeks and will probably exceed the record from week 8. Of the cattle slaughtered in the Netherlands, 90 percent can usually be defined as dairy cows. The remaining 10 percent is beef cattle.
The market has learned that the Gosschalk export slaughterhouse will switch to exclusively beef slaughter from the second week of March, due to the phosphate production plan that ensures a rapid influx of sausage cows. The pigs that would otherwise go to Gosschalk are then taken over by Compaxo, which expands the slaughter capacity for this.
