January brought an unexpected surprise in terms of milk supply, but February certainly lives up to expectations. The minus in the Dutch milk supply is even greater than the interim result of FrieslandCampina suggested.
In February, the Dutch milk supply amounts to 1,12 million tons of milk. A minus of 3,5 percent compared to a year earlier. It is the first significant step back in milk supply since the end of the milk quota. Previously, the months of November and December already yielded results in line with a year earlier. January put an end to that trend by producing another plus compared to the previous year, but in February the supply drops again.
The figures surrounding the milk supply are in line with the slaughter figures in recent weeks. It also supports the lower demand for animal feed. The fat percentage took a small step back to 4,52 percent, resulting in a fat production of 50.665 tons.
At the same time, February 2017 has one day less than February 2016, which also produces a different picture. The daily production for February 2016 amounts to 40.045,6 tons of milk, compared to a daily production of 40.022,2 tons of milk in February 2017. Then the decline based on daily production amounts to 0,06 percent. Which is a decrease that is more or less in line with that of November 2016.
For the whole of 2017, the milk supply amounts to 2,35 million tons. A year earlier this was 2,38 million tons of milk. A decrease of 1,19 percent.
It also provides slightly more insight into the national milk supply compared to FrieslandCampina's share. More about that later this Tuesday in an analysis of Boerenbusiness Milk especially for insiders.
