With less than 2 million euros in export value in 2016, the return action by the Turkish Association of Meat Products, and what may result from it, will cause little damage to the Dutch meat sector.
In protest against the ban on speaking in the Netherlands by the Turkish ministers last week, the association wants to return 40 cows from the Netherlands. The symbolic action of a large dairy farm in the western province of Çanakkale seems rather bizarre in the Netherlands. The association would also no longer want to source animal products from the Netherlands in the future. According to the Turkish meat producers, Turkey should focus on its own breeding.
Given the volume of live animals that Turkey obtains from the Netherlands, the impact will not be too bad. In 2016, a value of 1,7 million euros crossed the Turkish border, according to figures from the CBS. In 2015 and 2014 this was lower at 1,3 and 1,2 million euros. From 2010 to 2012, many more animals were involved. At that time it was about amounts between 4,2 and 6,4 million euros.
Compared to other buyers, current sales are not that high at all and are at or below the level of, for example, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Slovakia. A buyer like the United States has bought about 211 million euros worth of live animals in the past two years. Belgium is at 340 million euros.
If the Turks actually start banning meat and meat products, the loss will be limited. In 2015 and 2016 it concerned a value of 4,5 and 3,3 million euros. Compared to other European countries, that is a pittance. Countries such as Saudi Arabia and Latvia were much higher last year.
