French voluntarily put the brakes on milk supply

18 April 2017 - Herma van den Pol

The French report a dip in the milk collection for the second month in a row. Among other things, a voluntary brake on the milk supply has contributed to this. The milk price remains above 30 euros per 100 litres.

The French collected 6,3 percent less milk in February. This after an earlier dip in January. Two arguments are mentioned for the disappointing figures in the milk supply. For example, there is a voluntary scheme for the supply of less milk and French dairy farmers have to contend with roughage of moderate quality.

The milk supply in February amounts to 1,96 million tons. The last time this month yielded less milk was in 2013. Decreases are observed in almost all regions of France. Usually the supply reaches the highest point in the milk supply around mid-April. The main question now is how long the supply will maintain the higher level.

The French Ministry of Agriculture sets a price of 31 euros per 100 liters of milk. That is a minus of 2 euros compared to January, but a strong improvement compared to the milk price of one year earlier. For milk with standard contents, the price was EUR 32,50 per 100 liters and the milk price actually paid is EUR 34,60 per 100 litres.
