Irish milk processors broke records in May. Never before have they processed so many liters of milk in that month. It seems increasingly likely that the Irish will pass the 1 billion liter mark.
Milk processors expect an 8 percent increase in milk processing compared to May 2016. The 3 largest processors (Glanbia, Dairygold and Kerry) also expect increases in May volumes.
Increases above 4 percent
Milk processor Glanbia expects an increase of 8 percent and Dairygold expects an increase of 7,5 percent. Kerry expects a slightly less high increase and reports an increase of 4,5 percent.
Milk processor Kerry expects processing to be 2 percent ahead of last year. Glanbia says it's already 8 percent.
Even more increases
All 4 West Cork processors report increases. Drinagh, Brandon and Barryroe expect an 8 percent increase. Lisavaird even expects an increase of more than 11 percent.
Aurivo expects an increase of 6 percent, Arrabawn an increase of 8 percent, LacPatrick an increase of 5 percent and Lakeland 6 percent.
One billion feasible?
Ireland's monthly milk intake stood at 2016 million liters in May 918. Most processors expect an increase of 6 to 8 percent this year. That would amount to 55 to 75 million extra liters of milk. This would mean that the limit of 1 billion liters would just not be reached.
