In 2022, China will be the leader in the dairy market

22 August 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The US is currently the largest dairy market in the world. That could well change in the coming years. According to Euromonitor International, China will take over that leading position in 2022.

The main reason for this, according to Euromonitor International, is that consumer demand will change significantly over the next 5 years.

American population is drinking less milk

Consumer changes eating pattern
For example, Americans drink less milk, while Chinese consumers consume more dairy. Americans in particular consume less flavored milkbecause they experience the relatively high sugar content as unhealthy.

The consumption of dairy products is also increasing in India. That country is expected to take fourth place in 2021. The rising consumption in India is mainly due to the fact that the Indian population pays more attention to hygiene and is therefore more likely to buy dairy products from the supermarket.

Yogurt is becoming more popular
In China, the increase is mainly caused by an increasing consumption of yoghurt products. This is because those products are easy and quick to consume. In addition, the demand for yoghurt products with added vitamins and proteins is also increasing in China.

Germany less present
It also appears that Germany is less and less present on the dairy market. The country is expected to rank fifth in 2018. However, after that, Germany's share will become less and less. Our neighbors will rank seventh in 2022.

The current top 10

  1. USA
  2. China
  3. Brazil
  4. Japan
  5. Russia
  6. Germany
  7. France
  8. India
  9. Britain
  10. Mexico

The Chinese market will be 2022% larger than the US dairy market by 0,3.
