Demand for cheese is rising

Fonterra expands further in Australia

Fonterra will continue to expand in Australia. The dairy processor has opened a new factory in Victoria to meet rising demand for cheese, especially pizza cheese.

Fonterra has invested more in factories in Australia in recent years. The volume of milk processed by Fonterra in Australia increased by 2016% between June 2017 and June 30. The new factory in Australia will mainly make cheese for the Chinese and Japanese markets, according to the Japanese magazine Nikkei Asian Review.

Half use Fonterra cheese

Demand for cheese is growing strongly
In China, pizzerias are becoming more and more popular. And of all pizzas eaten, almost half use Fonterra cheese. "The popularity of our cheese is mainly because our cows spend a lot of time outside. That has a real effect on the quality of the cheese," says Rene Dedoncker, manager director of Fonterra Australia.

There is also a lot of room to grow in the Japanese market. There, the consumption of cheese increases by 3% annually. "About 40% of the Asian population now eats fast food. And the share of dairy products in fast food has increased by 5% in the past 30 years. That offers many opportunities," said Jacqueline Chow, COO Global Consumer and Foodservice at Fonterra.
