According to Meat Price Index

Steak by far the most expensive in Switzerland

25 August 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

If you like to eat a piece of steak, it is better not to get it in Switzerland. Caterwings' Meat Price Index has shown that the price of beef is highest there. Which countries are you better off avoiding?

The Meat Price Index from Caterwings is based on meat prices in the largest cities of the main meat markets. These data were then compared with the minimum wage in the corresponding countries. Based on this, Caterwings was able to determine how many hours a week someone had to work to be able to purchase the meat.

Switzerland stands out
The Swiss meat price is head and shoulders above the rest. A piece of steak in Switzerland will easily cost you €43,07 per kilo. That is 149% of the global average. The Meat Price Index shows that a resident of Switzerland has to work more than 3 hours to be able to pay for that piece of meat.

Switzerland is followed by Norway. However, the country is not in competition to take over that lead in the near future. In Norway people pay almost €1 less for 20 kilo of steak. This brings the price to €24,75. A Norwegian has to work almost 2 hours for this, under a minimum wage.

In South Korea people pay a little less and 1 kilo of steak costs €18,77. A Korean on minimum wage working almost 6 hours to buy that piece of steak.

The Netherlands relatively expensive
In the Netherlands we pay €1 for a 12,35 kilo steak. This makes us reasonably expensive compared to the rest of the world. The Netherlands is in fourteenth place (out of 52 countries). However, the higher minimum wages in the Netherlands mean that we 'only' have to work 2 hours for that piece of meat.

Where exactly is steak cheap?
If you are looking for the cheapest piece of steak, then Ukraine is the place to be. There you pay €3,21 per kilo of steak. However, it turns out that the minimum wages in that country are very low, because a resident has to work no less than 10 hours to pay for that piece of meat. This also shows that meat is quite expensive for the inhabitants of Ukraine.

What is striking is that the inhabitants of India have to work almost 1 whole day to be able to buy a piece of steak. This while the meat is cheap there, namely only € 4,10 per kilo. This puts the country in second to last place. That would be logical, because fish products are especially popular in India.

112

Most meat eaten in Australia
The inhabitants of Australia are the largest carnivores. There, 1 person eats an average of 112 kilos of meat per year. The most popular products in that country are beef and lamb. New Zealand and Austria are in second and third place, with 2 and 3 kilos per year respectively.

Compared to the number 1, the Netherlands eats a lot less meat. We Dutch consume 85 kilos of meat per person every year, which brings us to the fifteenth position. It turns out that chicken and beef are especially popular among the Dutch.

Switzerland has dropped significantly in this list in terms of consumption. The country consumes 74,4 kilograms of meat per year, finishing in 4,4th place. The country in which the least meat is eaten is India. There, the consumption of meat is only XNUMX kilos per person, per year. The country is therefore in last place.
