Shocking images of animal suffering have once again been released by animal welfare organization Animal Rights. This time it concerns a slaughterhouse for cattle in the Flemish town of Izegem.
The images, which Animal Rights has distributed, show, among other things, that the employees of the slaughterhouse violently manipulate the animals with a stick to get them into the shooting box. According to Animal Rights, the meat is available at Makro and in several Dutch restaurants.
Not sedated
"One of the workers administers electric shocks to the cattle, which is not allowed by law. And despite the legal obligation that the animals must be stunned during the slaughter process, the images show several cattle being throated and bled while fully conscious. ", says Robert Molenaar, director of Animal Rights to NU.nl.
According to the director, it concerns the Verbist slaughterhouse, part of the VEVIBA group. The main customers of that slaughterhouse are Delhaize, Colruyt and Carrefour. About 5% of the beef is exported to the Netherlands and France.
Not the first time
Earlier this year, a slaughterhouse came into the Belgian Tielt already discredited. animal rights brought to light that pigs were kicked, beaten and fully conscious drowned in a hot water bath in the slaughterhouse.
