There was 1,65% more milk in August, compared to the same month in 2016. Compared to the 5-year average, the milk receipt of 1.182.522 tons in 2017 is still more than 5% ahead.
Official figures for September are not yet available. Several processors do report that more milk is coming their way. The cause is being sought in the weather. The dry and warm September weather of 2016 did not apply this year. Naturally, the high milk price in Europe also plays a stimulating role.
On balance, there is more milk in Europe. The milk supply in July was 1,7% higher, or an increase of 219.000 tons. Growth is mainly taking place in Poland, Ireland and Italy.
More milk outside the EU
New Zealand dairy farmers have started the 2017/2018 season well, with 7% more milk in July. However, in August the milk supply is again 1,5% behind with 1.321.000 tons of milk. Figures that are quite similar to previous years. The reason why milk supplies in New Zealand are declining is due to a cold late winter. The coming months will reveal how much milk comes from the Oceania region.
More milk in the US
In the United States there is actually more milk. According to the USDA (the American Department of Agriculture), milk production in August amounted to 8.505.500 tons. This is more than 2% more than last year and almost 1 million tons more than the 5-year average. The growth of 10% in Texas (the fifth largest milk lake) is striking and by far the largest.
