It is quite possible that intervention stocks of skimmed milk powder will eventually go to the animal feed industry. This was announced by European Commissioner Phil Hogan yesterday, 11 October.
According to Hogan, the European Commission (EC) cannot continue to intervene indefinitely, as 380.000 tons of milk powder are already in stock. The Committee is therefore investigating all reasonable options for reducing stocks.
Hogan: "This could affect the dairy market in 2018 and ultimately milk prices." According to the European Commissioner, caution is advised in this regard.
Continue intervention
Hogan went on to say that the European Commission wants to proceed with the intervention scheme. The comment he made here is that intervention schemes should not be more attractive than market prices.
