Milk supply in the Netherlands in September was ahead of last year. That is striking, but why?
In total, Dutch dairy processors collected 1.140.910 tons of milk. That is a plus of 0,6% compared to the same month in 2016. Compared to the 5-year average, the plus is much larger, at 6,65%.
Cool September weather
The weather in September may have made all the difference this year. In 2016, September brought a few tropical days. In addition, it was unusually warm. The average temperature at that time was almost 3 degrees Celsius ahead of normal. This year the temperature was slightly lower than normal.
Better levels
In addition to the fact that a larger volume has been produced, the fat percentage in the milk has also increased. The average fat percentage in 2016 was 4,22%. This year there was 4,33% fat in the milk. This means fat production is 2,5% higher, namely 49.126 tonnes.
Although hard figures are still lacking, it is expected that surrounding countries (such as France and Germany) will also see positive results in September. The milk supply in September is ahead of previous years.
