Sustainable milk flow

A-ware concludes agreement with Albert Heijn

11 December 2017 - Esther de Snoo - 13 comments

Cheesemaker Royal A-ware has signed an agreement with Albert Heijn to make the retailer's own dairy brand more sustainable. A separate program is being set up for this. Dairy farmers can register from today, Monday 11 December.

A-ware wants to set up a separate milk flow to process cheese and other dairy products for Albert Heijn. The origin of the products becomes more transparent and the production method more sustainable. The cow, the soil and the farmer are central here.

Dairy farmers who participate in the program receive a premium on top of the A-ware milk price. The program will be introduced step-by-step in the period from 2018 to 2020.

All dairy cows and young stock must be grazed

Far-reaching grazing
The dairy products that A-ware wants to make are based on extensive outdoor grazing. In this, A-ware goes further than is currently the case. It has been agreed that within this program all dairy cows and young stock are grazed. In the winter season, when the cows are in the stable, they must have a place to eat and lie down and more space. The feed will also consist of at least 80% (preserved) grass during the winter months.

Ground-bound
With this step, A-ware wants to show that it takes responsibility for achieving the climate objectives. The land-based character of dairy farming is central to this. Feed should be sourced from the region as much as possible to avoid excessive CO2 emissions.

The use of 100% herb-rich grassland is necessary to promote biodiversity and attract meadow birds. Farmers participating in this program are no longer allowed to plow the land. This is to prevent emissions from the soil. According to A-ware, the dairy farmer should gain more knowledge of soil management.

Green power
The dairy farmers who supply milk within this program must work with the lowest possible CO2 emissions. This by using only green energy. Calves are reared on the farm or within a radius of 25 kilometers.

The agreements that A-ware has made with Albert Heijn are a step towards making milk flows within the dairy more sustainable. CEO Jan Anker: "This development fits in with A-ware's strategy to make our milk flows more sustainable together with our dairy farmers and to add value to the market together with our chain partners."

Definitely going to catch a dime more, I don't think we should start this as farmers.

Albert Heijn has another point for Window Dressing.
Are their stores also powered with green electricity/solar panels?

The difference with "industrially produced maize milk" will rise to 10 cents per kg of milk within a few years.

But whether there is anything extra left at the bottom is of course the question, just look at all the Beter Leven stars that do not provide extra business profit in other livestock sectors.

Great business!! Sustainability does not come out of the blue. Additional compensation is of course included.

If you want to produce milk that does not differ from the standard, you will also have to settle for a milk price that does not differ.

at albert hein, only sustainable consumers will soon be allowed to shop, so don't go on holiday by bike, heating down and safe sex, otherwise you won't be allowed to enter the ah

All (anonymous) negative reactions really do not lead to an improvement in the market position of the dairy farmers. Come up with a good alternative yourself to safeguard your international position in the future. If you don't have a plan yourself, you become part of someone else's plan. Then don't complain and blame others who do listen to consumers. Look how many phones Nokia still makes. Think carefully about your own future.

in the Netherlands it also stops when farmers exceed the cost price of the revenue model. And other multinationals, including AH, are starting to eat the cake of the existing market share (milk reference dairies). Many milk factories no longer have real entrepreneurs on the board!! other multinationals (AH) Too bad for the Dutch milk farmers that they don't want to see it themselves....

Friesland Campina is again missing an opportunity close to home. The board and management prefer to think of themselves rather than of the members. The entire top is almost replaced with golden handshakes that the members can pay.
They would rather squander our money abroad than they can also make trips on our backs. When will the members be considered again?

For the first club maybe a bit "nice" (but what is 3 cents, will also cost money), but it will be diluted in the foreseeable future and the rest "become" obliged to join. And then the 3 cents off again, and again just like with kkm: "otherwise we would have done less"....

I also think it's a good idea if the cows would get a daily massage, as well as a hot tub in the meadow. As a consumer, I have nothing to do with that, but I do think it is so animal-friendly.
