Lactalis launches global recall

12 December 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

Dairy manufacturer Lactalis is launching a worldwide recall for its baby milk powder products. This is because of the risk of salmonella contamination. Health authorities in France say that some 26 children have become ill since the end of December.

The recall includes products exported to China, Great Britain, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sudan and sold worldwide under the brand names Milumel, Picot and Celi.

Almost 7.000 tons
Michel Nalet, spokesperson for Lactalis, informed AFP that almost 7.000 tons may be contaminated, but the French company cannot yet make any definitive statements. It is also unable to indicate how much of it is currently still on the market, has been used and/or is in stock.

Lactalis suspects that the contamination originated in the factory in Craon (Northern France). All products made there since mid-February have since been recalled. The company also states that precautions have been taken to disinfect the machines in the factory.

Salmonella
Salmonella can cause food poisoning and symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting. The disease is dangerous for the very young children and the elderly. This is because of the risk of dehydration.
