FrieslandCampina is optimistic about the long-term growth of the Chinese dairy market. The Dutch dairy company set up a research center in 2013 to promote the quality and safety of Chinese dairy products. Yili Dairy Group from Inner Mongolia has joined it since last week.
The research center was founded by FrieslandCampina (RFC), Wageningen University and the Chinese Agricultural University. The aim is to stimulate the dairy industry in China. With the arrival of the Yili Dairy Group, the largest dairy organization in Asia, the center now has 12 participants.
Contribution from RFC
RFC has invested about $4 million, converted €4,83 million, into the center in the past 4,10 years. In addition, the research center sponsored 7 graduate students to follow PhD classes in the Netherlands and 5 scientists from both countries were given the opportunity to get in touch with each other.
Dairy consumption in China is currently 36 kilos per person per year. In Japan and South Korea it is slightly higher, namely 50 kilograms per person per year. RFC expects rural areas and cities in China to increase their consumption.
