As a result of the earthquakes, approximately 80% of all manure cellars in Groningen are leaking. That is the estimate of dairy farmer Ate Kuipers from Den Ham, which is located in the affected area. To recover the damage from the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM), Groningen farmers are now working together.
According to Kuipers, the last major earthquake (magnitude 3,4 on the Richter scale) in Zeerijp on January 8, has stirred up a lot among the people of Groningen. "The claims that severe tremors would be a thing of the past have therefore turned out to be incorrect." Kuipers, who is a member of the Groninger Gasberaad, says that local agriculture in the province has suffered considerable damage from the earthquakes.
Kuipers says his company was hit by the latest earthquake and suffered significant damage; stable walls are torn, as are the manure cellars. The stables date from the XNUMXs and XNUMXs. Incidentally, the new stables are the most badly damaged.
80% of manure cellars are leaking
The dairy farmer estimates that approximately 80% of the manure cellars in the earthquake area are leaking. “If even manure cellars from the year 2000, with 25 centimeters thick double-reinforced concrete, are leaking; what about the manure pits from the seventies?” In addition to manure cellars, there is also a lot of damage to other agricultural objects, such as cubicle sheds and storage sheds. In addition to material damage to buildings, there is also subsidence. In addition, even with the slightest tremors, the unrest in the (dairy) herd sets in.
Going to battle together
Kuipers says that it is now important to recover the (agricultural) damage from NAM. Groningen farmers are fighting this together by uniting in 'Farmers Strong Together'. This is an initiative of the Dutch Dairy Farmers' Union (NMV) and the Dutch Arable Farming Union (NAV).
The first meeting will be organized on Monday evening, January 29, for all agricultural victims and interested parties. Kuipers: “Unfortunately, we are in this boat and cannot get out for the time being.” According to the dairy farmer, it is therefore good that Groningen farmers unite, so that the damage can be jointly recovered from the NAM.
Depreciation reimbursed
According to Kuipers, a bright spot in dark days is that NAM must compensate for the depreciation of houses and agricultural objects. Even if they have not yet been sold or have suffered no physical damage. That was decided today, January 23, by the Court of Appeal in Leeuwarden.
