EU milk prices almost a quarter higher in 2017

The average European milk price decreased slightly in December. However, the largest decrease is seen outside the European Union (EU), according to the milk price comparison of LTO Nederland and ZuivelNL. With the aid of the milk prices of December, the interim position for the whole of 2017 can be drawn up. This shows that milk prices were almost a quarter higher than in 2016.

The average European milk price for December is €36,64 per 100 kilos (with an annual supply of 500.000 kilos of milk and 4,2% fat and 3,4% protein). It is a decrease of €0,42 compared to 1 month earlier. However, compared to 1 year earlier, the milk price is €4,20 higher, or 13% higher.

Granarolo pays the most
There are hardly any changes in the top 5 of the EU in December. The Italian Granarolo remains in first place with a milk price of €40,71 per 100 kilos. A-ware follows just below with a milk price of €40,41 per 100 kilos. FrieslandCampina is in third place with a milk price of €40,36 per 100 kilos, followed by DMK with €39,84 per 100 kilos. Aloïs Muller closes the line with €37,76 per 100 kilos.

Outside the EU, the milk price is the main factor in the United States see a big drop. This reduces from €36,28 in November to €33,07 in December. Fonterra keeps the milk price stable, but still records a small increase (thanks to the exchange rate), resulting in €30,85 per 100 kilos. The Swiss Emmi continues to lead with a milk price of €49,95 per 100 kilos.

Standings for 2017
Because the milk prices for December have been announced, an average can be drawn up for 2017. These are the prices excluding supplementary payments. The average European milk price is €34,90 per 100 kilos, compared to €28,23 per 100 kilos in 2016. This is an improvement of €6,67, or 24%. On average, milk prices increased between 3% (Valio) and 43% (DMK).

Outside European borders, improvements were considerably lower. For example, the Swiss Emmi recorded a plus of 2%, with an average milk price of €49,09. In the United States, the recovery is limited to 7%, which yields a milk price of €36,22 per 100 kilos. Only New Zealand's Fonterra saw a sharp improvement. There, the average milk price increased by 16% to €31,94 per 100 kilos.
