The Dutch dairy sector can refute excellent export figures for 2017. With the exception of butter, all major dairy products put a plus away. The export of the troubled skimmed milk powder demands attention all over Europe.
Condensed milk is the product that the Netherlands sold most outside the European borders. The volume increased by 7,6% to 222.000 tons. Within this stream, the Netherlands stands head and shoulders above the rest. On balance, Europe exports 318.000 tons of this.
The Dutch export of butter (outside Europe), on the other hand, has had to concentrate 28% to just under 15.000 tons. Across Europe, exports fell by 15% to 137.000 tonnes, mainly due to the Limited Availability.
Mexico wholesaler skimmed milk powder
Europe has sold more on the world market for both whole and skimmed milk powder. For example, the export of whole milk powder increased by 3% to 393.000 tons, of which 149.000 tons (+2%) from the Netherlands. Sales mainly take place in China. On balance, Chinese imports increased by 12% to 470.000 tons. Algeria is also a major importer.
The largest percentage growth in exports is attributable to skimmed milk powder. Together, the European countries exported more than 788.000 tons (+36%). Dutch sales increased by 42% to 78.000 tons. Mexico swallows large volumes. On balance, the Mexicans imported 11% more to 17 tons in the first 307.000 months.
The reason why skimmed milk powder is in great demand on the world market is probably the large prijs. This is under pressure from the intervention stocks, which are still hanging above the market.
Cheese to Japan
Cheese remains the largest European export commodity, with 829.000 tons (+4%). With 140.000 tons, the Netherlands is by far the largest cheese exporter in Europe. It is striking that European sales to Japan have increased considerably (+20% to 94.882 tons). This makes Japan the second largest buyer of European cheese after the United States.
