Via mozzarella and cream

A-ware creates opportunities for extra milk money

22 March 2018 - Herma van den Pol

A-ware is looking for new dairy farmers. However, these are livestock farmers whose milk must meet special requirements. And there is a premium for that. A-ware needs the milk, because it's working on a mozzarella cheese factory. In addition, investments are being made in a cream factory.

Although the cheese factory in Heerenveen (Leeuwarden) is still young, A-ware is already known for further to want to grow† This also means that the demand for milk is increasing. "With a view to expansion, we are looking for new dairy farmers", says Klaas de Jong, COO at Royal A-ware. However, these must be farmers who are willing to go the extra mile, because special requirements are imposed on the milk. On the other hand, there is a premium.

Growth in Heerenveen
The expansion concerns a mozzarella cheese factory and a cream factory. Fonterra, with whom A-ware collaborates, plays a major role in both projects. "This is the first mozzarella cheese factory in the Netherlands on this scale," said A-ware in a press release. The aim is for the factory to be operational in 2020. The cheese is mainly intended to meet the demand the international growth markets .

The cream factory is also being used to meet the demand on the international markets. "In this factory, cream that is released during cheese production can be processed into cream products for the international market." Fonterra will also play an important role in this, because it provides knowledge and experience.

A-ware was already active in cream through Catshaar dairy and a Belgian processor of cream. By now building a factory in Heerenveen, the cheese specialist is realizing its strategy of building short, efficient and sustainable chains.

Extra milk flows
More information about the new milk flow will be published shortly. The cheese maker currently has a milk flow for Albert Heijn, organic milk, VLOG milk and meadow milk.
