The approximately 400.000 tons of skimmed milk powder in intervention must be used by the European Commission to fight hunger in Yemen and Somalia. That is the appeal made by Hilal Elver, food rapporteur for the United Nations (UN).
Elver says the stored powder is welcome for acute hunger relief in these areas. She does note, however, that such aid can cause damage in the long run. This is because the local population benefits from their own production.
Round table discussion
European Commissioner Phil Hogan has announced at an earlier stage that the European Commission is bound by the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO). That agency does not allow such emergency aid just like that.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 11 April, a round table discussion on this topic will take place in Brussels. Despite the concrete proposal from the UN, the market does not expect a destination for the stocks.
