Little control

Is FrieslandCampina still a cooperative?

18 April 2018 - Herma van den Pol - 24 comments

'How many dairy farmers still have to stop?' This is only one of the reactions to the plans, which FrieslandCampina revealed on Monday 1 April. In the meantime, it has become clear that there are still opportunities for dairy farmers who are covered by the bottleneck scheme. This does not take away all concerns because; how will the bank and retail respond?

FrieslandCampina presented plans to regain control of the milk supply by means of a growth agreement. Labeled as factory quota by dairy farmers. This means that if the size of the total milk production by the members of FrieslandCampina exceeds the market demand, action is taken. This intervention consists of a discount of 10 cents per litre, which is supplied in excess of the company quota. A quota is set per company.

big surprise
"It came like a rabbit out of a top hat" and: "This was not expected". Ronald Beulink, dairy farmer from Zelhem and Alexander Vugts, dairy farmer in Haaren, about the plans of the largest dairy cooperative in the Netherlands. Beulink was at the members' meeting on Tuesday, where Vugts still has to wait for the meeting that is on the agenda next week.

Minimal say in the plans

What is striking is that the members' say in the plans is minimal. Vugts: "You don't have the feeling that this is a cooperative." Beulink adds: "A member has the right of initiative, but only on the subjects listed in the annexes." This is not the case with current plans.

Nevertheless, the meetings are a time to make your voice heard. "I expressed my opinion extensively at the meeting, but this does not have to be the opinion of the majority," says Beulink. "However, the vote that followed indicated that the majority supported my feeling. There was no one for that. About half were against and the other half had no opinion."

All owner
"We all own the cooperative," says Beulink. "If the proposals are voted on, companies will immediately collapse. I cannot be satisfied with such measures, from a party that stands up for the companies. I am not the person who votes for a measure, which, so to speak 90% can get by and a few splinters fall off."

In the meantime, there is hope for the dairy farmers, as it turned out during the meeting in Maarheeze. The board in Maarheeze said that the extra allocated phosphate rights for the pressure cases will be included be via option 5† Jan-Willem ter Avest, spokesperson for FrieslandCampina, indicated that when the politicians point out problems, they do not rule out the possibility that they can be converted into milk.

For Vugts it depends on whether he stays with the cooperative. "I don't want to leave. The cooperative is doing its best and is able to achieve an above-average milk price." He also wonders whether the current measures are necessary, because there are already many quitters and more are to come. Beulink agrees: "Because, where should all members go then?"

Fear of banking and retail
Another fear, expressed by both dairy farmers, is that the discount of 10 euro cents per kilo of milk will cause a chain reaction. "Retail also sees that milk will be purchased with a discount of 30% on the raw material price. I doubt very much whether this concept will have a good effect on the milk price," says Vugts. The question is also how the bank will deal with this when applying for financing.

It creates a lot of uncertainty again. The new Topline has not yet been a resounding success among livestock farmers. "There is nothing there yet, but they do want to set up a special milk flow for it," says Beulink.

The livestock farmers make it clear that the communication of the new plans and the content together generate a lot of resistance. Beulink therefore asks the question: "How many farmers still have to stop to secure our own future?"

if the department board talks more with my ex partner than with me, the farmer and the department chairman pulls his hands off it because you are in a study club with it. and if you look at quilp what is there in the computer and what you have to look up for paper work, then I know that it is not a cooperative and that half of them can get out in Amersfoort that does not come to work with an electric car. and the staff in Amersfoort working 10 hours a week more is also very good for the foot print

where is french with a movie? or is it no longer coming after you framed him last time?

This is the best plan that frieslandcampina has introduced in recent years

Fraudsters are criminals who have no right to speak? Fairtrade farmers have it better than us with the so-called cooperative!

In the end it comes down to the milk price. To rule is to look into the future. If we do nothing and the milk price is bad, people will also complain. There is a risk involved, but that is our fate!!

Anyone who has obeyed the law and delivered what he was allowed to do because of the phosphate rights, will be severely punished. Milk production has increased partly because the lawbreakers continued to milk. They are now rewarded for their behavior because FC applies discounts on the DELIVERED milk in a certain period.
You always drive properly 130 on the highway and your neighbor 150. He accepts the fine. He may drive 140 in the future and you may go back to 120. Logical right!

Great plan from FC.
This will help keep the price from falling further.

an uneven playing field the administrators bought phosphate with prior knowledge before 16-4-2018 16.00 nice meeting word that the legislator will soon have stated that the whole year still had the opportunity to buy.
amton 18 April 2018
milk quota had to disappear anyway and these are now the consequences, a pity for the growers, these were before the disappearance of the quota, now they have to take the consequences as well.
I don't even agree with the plans.
bull 18 April 2018
If someone buys phosphate rights in the future from a colleague supplier to FrieslandCampina, it should be possible to take the milk that has been delivered to them. On balance FC is not affected by this and it is an incentive for business development.

the date of introduction of phosphate rights 1-1-2018 must apply to every director, so neat to prevent prior knowledge and set a good example!!!
Bob 18 April 2018
Peter, that would also be a good plan for the drivers, if they are real guys then they will expose themselves. The rest will follow better!!

I know a board member (member council) who bought 3 cows 40 weeks ago.

ow I know 1 who has stopped .... who forces you to stay with this club? .... nobody eh?
Annie 19 April 2018
40 years ago, the milk price was the same as today. With every change, better arguments are made for the milk price. Choose your own course. That seems best to me.

Dear Tinus, I hear that you have little understanding of cooperative insight. Every member has the RIGHT to bring in matters, without that stupid talk that directors dare to say a lot to members lately if they have a different point of view that does not fit their alley! "who forces you to stay with this club"

ARROGANT AT THE TOP
Padre 21 April 2018
Peter I want to go one step further all directors who have bought additional rights must be expelled as members. Insider trading is punishable So I want transparency So all directors have to prove to the members that they have behaved well

I sympathize with you farmers, I myself am a farmer's son and have been working at Friesland Campina for 37 years now. Since Campina was added, everything has deteriorated, bad policy and terrible overheads, the head office in Amersfoort has almost 3000 people and there are also so many managers who are redundant on site. money is being thrown.

I hope you get a little more control and can do something about this.
Ton Westgeest 19 May 2018
FrieslandCampina invests in Holland Dairy PLC in Ethiopia.

How can you sell that to your members? The first ten years there may not be any profit.... But after that, no money is allowed out of the country, it can only be invested there again in the country.
Farm money then becomes development money! Away....
What about cooperation?
socks 20 May 2018
Apparently money is earned from milk. But a decent milk price cannot be discounted. That is called cooperation, with the largest possible overhead [all of us know] to keep the milk price low. in favor of their salary. And at the meeting appeasing things with the future is so great. The sheep in the room are happy again and no difficult questions. This has nothing to do with cooperation anymore. {Just google Mr Raiffeisen and the meaning of the cooperative idea].
Ton Westgeest 20 May 2018
Raiffeisen transformed his charitable association into a cooperative.

I think Bas don't understand it well at FC, they turn the cooperative into a charitable association. Handing out money in China, Pakistan, Myanmar, Ethiopia etc.
Not only do they hand out farmer's money, but they also drive the farmers crazy here with all those shit rules.

Apparently nothing is learned from blunders at other companies and especially cooperatives.Examples was Avebe with their tapioca project in China Waterleiding drente[wmd]drama in Indonesia Rijks university groningen, hopeless project in China. What should you look for as a Dutch company?
You can no longer respond.
