Pasture hay is scarcer, price is rising

23 May 2018 - Kimberly Bakker

The trade in feed is still relatively calm. Nevertheless, mutations can be observed, for example in the price of perennial ryegrass. In addition, meadow hay is becoming increasingly scarce, so that the price is starting to rise.

The balance between supply and demand for meadow hay begins increasingly crooked to walk. The product is becoming increasingly scarce, while demand continues to increase. This causes the price to rise to €190 per tonne, free of charge. For very good quality, €200 per tonne is paid free of charge.

On the other hand, there is less and less trade in perennial ryegrass. Where the price has managed to remain stable recently €135 per tonne free of charge, the price now has no choice but to drop to €130 per tonne free of charge. Even lower prices are quoted for some parties.

Demand for straw is decreasing
It was a few weeks ago straw still the spectacle at the feed market, but there is little left of it. There is currently little trade in the product and many livestock farmers are trying to survive until the new harvest. This means that the price for straw, both barley and wheat straw, remains stable at €160 per tonne, delivered to the farm.

There is also still sufficient trade in silage, which means that the price remains stable here too. €40 to €50 per tonne is paid free of charge for the product. The price of spent grain also remains stable at €2,10 per percent dry matter. Although there may be some variation, partly due to transport costs, the price can sometimes rise to €2,25 per percent of dry matter.

Revival in silage maize at an end?
In recent weeks there seemed to be a small revival in the silage maize trade, but that seems to have come to an end this week. Trade is tepid and supply far exceeds demand. It makes the price take a step back to €52,50 per tonne, free of charge. In addition, the price is much lower than was the case during this period last year.

Arable farmers are cleaning up
Last week it turned out that the price of feed potatoes has come under pressure. This is partly because the product is available in abundance. This week the price remains stable at €24 per tonne free at the farm. However, several traders report that this is not the lower limit. Arable farmers are cleaning up and as a result the quality of the feed potatoes continues to decline. An even lower price is therefore in prospect.

Red fescue, tall fescue and meadow meadow are actually sold out everywhere, which means that the price for these products remains at €170, €150 and €150 per tonne, free of charge, respectively.
