The feed market is starting to revive somewhat, various traders say. In recent weeks the market has been mostly calm, there were few buyers and prices remained stable. However, this week the first price movements are visible again.
Currently, the most frequently asked for silage corn, which gave the price an opportunity to make a small increase (+€2). This causes it to rise back to the old level from €55 per tonne of franc farm. However, several traders report that when rain falls again, this demand will probably disappear immediately.
Good hope for straw from new harvest
In some places, the harvest of will start next week barley straw, which is 3 weeks earlier than normal. The first price speculations are therefore a fact; €100 to €110 per tonne free from farm. Traders are also positive about the expected quality. "The conditions were good, which gives good hope for the quality."
Speculations for the new crop have not yet had any effect on the prices for the old crop, as it remains (both for wheat and barley straw) at €160 per tonne free on the farm. As far as meadow hay is concerned, there is already more trade in new harvests. It makes a price of €160 to €170 per tonne of farm free. This also ensures that the price of old harvest is somewhat lower slumps to €175 per tonne free from farm.
Beer grain attracts
Bierbostel has been in a downward spiral in recent weeks, but that is no longer the case. The price rises to €1,90 per percent dry matter. According to a number of traders, this is striking, because the dry, warm summer weather ensures that more beer is produced. This logically means that more brewer's grains are entering the market. "So you would expect the price to fall due to the increasing supply."

The price of silage maize has started to climb again.
There is virtually no demand for perennial ryegrass, and that has an effect on the price. This shows a small decrease to € 127,50 per tonne franco farm. There is also little trade in silage grass. In the vicinity of Belgium you can still get some product here and there, but not much either. This causes the price to drop to €45 per tonne franco farm.
Potato market at a turning point?
The potato market is currently at a turning point and it can be seen on the potato futures market. This has no consequences for the price for now, because it will remain stable at €22,50 per tonne free from the farm. Traders expect the price to rise in the coming period. This is because less potatoes are expected to go to the animal feed industry.
Red fescue, reed fescue and meadowsweet are not yet available, which means that the price for these products will remain at €170, €150 and €150 per tonne free on farm.
Life in the brewery?
So there is a bit more demand across the board. Does this mean there is more life in the brewery? That's hard to say. Traders in the north of the country indicate that it is still quiet there, but it is busier in the middle and east of the country; especially because of the dry weather. However, on the other hand, they also report that the majority of dairy farmers still have enough of their own feed, so this is not (yet) the time to buy.
And then there is one more important aspect: rain. A lot livestock farmers wait a little longer, hoping for rain. However, if precipitation does not fall quickly, the grass will die at the livestock farmer. "This will eventually recover, but that will take time. In the meantime, they may start buying more," said a forage trader. Although some price movements are already visible, it is expected that the trade will only really loosen up in 2 to 3 weeks.
