Irish dairy cooperatives discuss merger

10 July 2018 - Kimberly Bakker

The Irish dairy cooperatives LacPatrick Dairies and Lakeland Dairies have announced that they are in talks about a possible merger.

If the merger is successful, a cooperative with about 3.200 members will be created, which will process 1,8 billion liters of milk on an annual basis. This would make the cooperative the second (Glanbia) largest dairy company become of Ireland.

Backgrounds
LacPatrick Dairies was created in 2015 after a merger of 2 other cooperatives. The dairy company currently processes 600.000 tons of milk on an annual basis. The milk comes from about 1.000 member dairy farmers, spread over 3 dairies.

The other party, Lakeland Dairies, is mainly active in the north of Ireland. This dairy cooperative processes around 1 billion liters of milk on an annual basis. About 2.200 dairy farmers are members of Lakeland Dairies.
