Higher milk prices dominant over June

11 July 2018 - Herma van den Pol

Increases in milk prices are dominant in June. Only in the Beemster (at Cono Kaasmakers) did the price remain stable, but at a level that is above the price of other processors. The upward trend continues in July, according to the latest quotations.

The current milk market has taken an unexpected turn. Prices are slowly falling, despite the fact that the summer holidays usually guarantee stable prices. The questions that now arise are: how much weight will the dry conditions weigh? Will there be less milk, and how much less?

Good mood
The mood was good in June and this time it is reflected in the prices. For example, milk prices rose by €0,22 to €1,28 per 100 kilos. Quite a wide range, which is mainly due to the level at which the price stands and the somewhat cautious attitude towards the erratic market.

34,05

euro

per 100 kilos is the highest price for June

With an annual supply of 600.000 kilos of milk (4,41% fat and 3,47% protein), this results in prices of €31,59 at the lower end (Vreugdenhil). However, when Arla would also be in the comparison, it would do slightly worse (with a milk price of €30). DMK/DOC Cheese follows with €32,84 per 100 kilos, FrieslandCampina notes €33,40 (this already takes into account deductions), Bel Leerdammer joins in with €33,85 and Cone is the frontrunner with a price of €34,05 per 100 kilos.

Over July, pluses continue
All milk prices are therefore almost €1,90 to more than €3 below last year's price. The quotations of Arla, DMK and FrieslandCampina for July indicate that the increases are continuing, but at the same time the playing field has changed. Taking into account the fact that the price for free milk has dropped to €34,50 per 100 kilos, the increases do not seem to continue after July and caution is advised.

There are still 2 trumps. The first is the drought; how long will the drought last, and what will it do to the milk supply in the European Union? The second trump card is the German processing. Last year, just after the summer, DMK started a campaign to keep dairy farmers and therefore raised the price. Will that happen again this year? Dairy farmers again indicate their intention to switch, but this is after the loss of BMG still like that?

The above prices do not take into account various supplements for special milk flows and grazing, because not all dairy farmers participate. Do you have a different annual supply or different levels? pass the milk price comparator and see how your company stacks up against others.
