The water board in Friesland (Wetterskip Fryslân) has lifted the irrigation ban with immediate effect. Contrary to expectations, the precipitation of the past few days has gradually fallen, so that the soil has absorbed the water well.
On average about 45 millimeters of precipitation fell in the water board area. Because there was a lower evaporation and the (agricultural) demand for water has decreased, the water system has been brought back into balance. The shortages are therefore a thing of the past for the time being. The quality of the water may also have improved as a result of the precipitation.
Water level IJsselmeer increased
The water level in the IJsselmeer has also risen again, which is also due to the fact that the water boards extract water to a limited extent from the 'rain barrel' in the Netherlands. The water board expects that no restrictions will be imposed on the intake of water from the IJsselmeer for the time being. However, the supply from the Rhine and the IJssel is still smaller than the demand.
On Thursday 26 July, the Frisian water board announced the irrigation ban which ended up being in force for just under 3 weeks.
