Small price changes on the feed market

11 September 2018 - Kimberly Bakker

A number of small price movements are visible on the feed market. For example, the prices of silage maize and brewer's grains are under pressure, but the price for straw is holding up well.

Traders report that the price of silage maize has come under pressure this week, which is caused by the fact that more and more supply is becoming available. It is also striking that the quality within the Netherlands varies regionally (sometimes even locally). It is difficult for forage traders to estimate quality and give an average price.

They estimate that €40 per tonne, free of charge, is paid for the very poor plots, but there are also plots of silage maize where €70 per tonne, free of charge, is charged. However, across the board the price is closest to €60 per tonne, free of charge. That is a slight decrease compared to last week.

Meadow hay sinks a bit
The meadow hay market has collapsed due to the fact that there is little trade. The traders reported last week that the meadow hay market showed an upward trend, but nothing could be further from the truth. This week the price will decline, causing the price to drop to €200 per ton, free of charge. Traders report that this is caused by less demand; some even report that the product is not very popular in the Netherlands anyway.

In addition to silage maize, the price for spent grain is also under strong pressure. This is mainly due to the fact that there is little trade in the product. In recent times, there has been talk of very long delivery times, which has caused livestock farmers to look for alternatives. This has caused the price to drop to €2,60 per percent dry matter.

(Text continues below the chart)Despite the price reduction, the price is still well above average.

Straw price remains stable
Very little can be said about the straw trade. Most forage traders indicate that it is quiet and that the market is holding up well. However, the price shows a small decrease, bringing the price to €125 per tonne, delivered to the farm.

It's not just the market for straw, it seems extremely stable, but the market for silage is also stable. The price for this product has been at €50 per tonne free of charge for weeks and it does not appear that this will change any time soon. On the other hand, the market for perennial ryegrass does show a price change. There is little trade, causing the price to drop to €140 per tonne, free of charge.

What is there no trade in?
Feed potatoes are no longer available, so the last quoted price remains. That is €40 per tonne, free of charge. There is also virtually no trade in red fescue, tall fescue and meadow meadow anymore. The prices for these products are €150, €150 and €155 per tonne, free of charge, respectively.
