FrieslandCampina defines the Top Dairy Line

13 September 2018 - Herma van den Pol - 1 reaction

FrieslandCampina has lifted a corner of the veil for the new Top Dairy line. This shows that not every dairy farmer can participate. In this way it defines the distance to the group that may or may not participate. The premium for the new line is initially €1, but will be increased to €2020 after 2.

FrieslandCampina already announced in April that it would Top Dairy Line was going to come. However, after that it was quiet. However, it has now been made clear from a letter to the members that the recruitment of interested and potential dairy farmers will start immediately. However, it is not possible for all dairy farmers to participate.

Location is decisive
"In the first phase, we are looking for dairy farms that are close to a production location where daily fresh dairy and cheese are made." This criterion should ensure that the logistics costs are limited. But, what's close? The processor has not yet made this clear, because it depends on the number of dairy farms that meet the standard.

How much milk is eligible is determined by market demand. This concerns milk from dairy farms that score the highest on the themes animal, nature and climate. This will be guaranteed by Stichting Milieukeur, under the quality mark 'On the way to Planet Proof'.

€1 . bonus
By participating in the Top-Zuivellijn of dairy cooperative FrieslandCampina, dairy farmers can initially earn €1 per 100 kilos. From January 2020 that will be €2 per 100 kilos. "In addition, extra revenues are used in cooperative sustainability initiatives. The profit from the special milk flows benefits the collective through the performance bonus."

FrieslandCampina wants to prevent loss of sales on the home market through this line. "There is a consumer demand for sustainable products." It is not yet clear whether there will be a deduction for members who do not participate (as with the bonus on grazing). In any case, nothing is said about that in the letter.

Yes, and then one of the requirements is that you are not allowed to use a roundup in your yard. How much does it take: maybe one liter. There are plenty of farmers who use jugs simultaneously on the entire farm. Is in no contrast. Is FC looking for a messy yard? Doesn't seem like a good idea to me. There are always other (chemical) alternatives
