Has the price of straw started an upward trend?

19 September 2018 - Kimberly Bakker

The feed market is in a difficult period. There is relatively little demand from livestock farmers, but the supply is also not always something to write home about. It seems that the price for straw has started an upward trend. What price does it bring?

The straw market is quiet, but the price is showing a significant increase. According to the forage traders, this is partly due to problems in transport capacity. According to the traders, there is a major shortage in transport, which means that straw is transported at high prices.

On the other hand, this is caused by French and German suppliers holding on to their product. Earlier it was said that there was enough straw in France, so the price did not have to rise. However, the supply is drying up and that is causing suppliers to hold on to their product (in the hope of higher prices).

This results in a price of €145 per tonne free at farm, which is a significant increase compared to last week. Traders also say that the French and Germans have even higher expectations of the price. "Here and there it is even said that the price will exceed last year's." Time will tell whether that will actually become true.

Meadow hay at a sky-high level
Not only has the price of straw risen sharply, but the price of meadow hay has also skyrocketed. The price this week amounts to €225 per ton, free of charge, compared to last week's price of €200 per ton, free of charge. This is mainly due to the fact that there is very little product available, while demand remains constant.

The price of spent grains remains stable this week at €2,60 per percent dry matter. There is more supply, delivery times are back to normal levels and demand is minimal. It results in a stable price this week, but traders expect it to start declining in the short term.

The price of meadow hay is significantly higher than last year.

Price for silage maize remains stable
There is little trade in the market for it silage corn, leaving the price at €60 per tonne, free of charge. Prices of €1,75 per percent dry matter are also mentioned. It is striking that there is quite a bit of supply available. Traders wonder whether this will cause prices to fall in the coming weeks.

In addition, various forage traders indicate that many livestock farmers are not yet ready to stock up on silage maize. This is because the harvest was much earlier than normal, which means they are currently busy with other matters (such as purchasing phosphate rights).

Significant increase for perennial ryegrass
The market for perennial ryegrass has remained stable in recent weeks at around €140 per tonne free of charge. However, in recent weeks this price has risen sharply. This means that the price this week will be €160 per tonne, delivered to the farm.

The silage market is still dependent on quality. The price this week amounts to €50 per tonne free at the farm. However, the very good quality can sometimes be traded for €60 to €70 per ton, free of charge, while the lower quality has a lower end of €40 per ton, free of charge.

Potato products difficult to obtain
In addition, traders say that potato products are difficult to obtain. So are the feed potatoes sold out at €40 per tonne free at farm. Potato press fibers are scarcely available, which makes the price high (€44 per ton, free of charge). Potato chips sell for the same price, but there is much less supply.

Red fescue, tall fescue and meadow meadow are also no longer available. The price for these products remains at €150, €150 and €155 per tonne, free of charge, respectively.
