Overijssel introduces goat stop immediately

The province of Overijssel announced on Friday 28 September that it would immediately introduce a goat stop. It means that from now on goat farms in the province are no longer allowed to expand.

In addition to the measure that the existing goat farms If they are no longer allowed to expand, new companies are no longer allowed to establish themselves in the province and the conversion of an agricultural company to a goat farm is no longer allowed. Companies are also not allowed to keep more goats than they currently have.

Health risks for local residents
The stop is mainly related to the possible health risks for local residents. A major national study is currently underway into the possible relationship between goat farming and lung complaints among local residents. 

Earlier, the provinces also decided Noord-Brabant, Gelderland and Utrecht to introduce a goat stop. The province of Overijssel is afraid that people are now moving to Overijssel, which has made the province decide to introduce the stop now.

Not for small businesses
As mentioned earlier, the goat stop applies from September 28, 2018. The companies that have applied for a permit before that date fall under the ban. The goat stop also does not apply to farms with fewer than 10 goats.
