FrieslandCampina announces the acquisition of Jana Foods, an importer and distributor of cheese in the United States (US). With the purchase, the dairy cooperative wants to strengthen the position of Dutch specialty cheeses.
FrieslandCampina has been trading with Jana Foods for years and the cooperative has now decided to buy the company. Jana Foods distributes different types of cheeses from countries all over the world. "Due to the takeover, there will be less room for other suppliers," says Jan-Willem ter Avest, spokesperson at FrieslandCampina.
More sales in the US
Jana Foods works with many major suppliers. This while only 11 people are employed at the company. With locations in New Jersey, San Francisco and Miami, FrieslandCampina can get closer to the American dairy market and thus skip intermediaries.
"Jana Foods will replace products from various suppliers with our products. Although there will also be suppliers who will continue to supply. This mainly concerns the products that FrieslandCampina does not produce," says Jan-Willem ter Avest. With the takeover, FrieslandCampina wants to focus on the sale of its own products.
How much does the US import?
In the first 9 months of 2018, the US imported about 125.000 tons of cheese. About 75% of this comes from the European Union (EU). On the other hand, cheese imports have decreased by 9% compared to the first 2017 months of 4.
The US imported about 2017 tons of cheese in 183.000, which is 10% less than was imported in 2016. This was mainly the result of a higher domestic cheese production in that year.
Consumption is increasing
Cheese consumption in the US has been increasing for years. In 2017, the average American ate 17,7 kilograms of cheese annually, compared to 2015 kilograms in 16,9. With the takeover, FrieslandCampina seems to want to respond to a growing American cheese market.
