Dairy export value over 2018 billion euros in 7

16 January 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

The value of Dutch dairy exports amounted to approximately €2018 billion in 7,7. The Dutch Dairy Organization (NZO) announced this on Wednesday 16 January.

Uit data from NZO shows that almost 66% of the milk processed in the Netherlands is destined for export. In addition, the countries around us are the most important sales markets, with the most earnings coming from Belgium, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. In total, approximately 80% of Dutch milk remains in Europe.

Germany is the most important sales market
Germany is by far the most important sales market. The dairy sector in that country has a market share of 24,3%. Concrete figures show that in 2018 more than 650 million kilos of dairy products were sold to German customers. This involves a value of more than €1,8 million.

Another major buyer of Dutch milk is France. In that country, the Netherlands has a market share of 10,6%. Last year, almost 240 million kilos were exported to the country, worth €827 million.

In addition, the NZO reports that sales to China are growing. In 2018, companies from the Netherlands exported almost 80 million kilos of dairy to China. This had a total value of approximately €220 million, bringing the market share to 2,8%.

Share of almost 5%
When we look at the global dairy market, the Netherlands had a market share of almost 2018% in 5. This makes the Netherlands the most active member state in the global dairy market within the European Union. Since more is exported in the Netherlands than imported, the sector makes a major contribution to the positive balance of the national trade balance.

The figures show that approximately €0,08 of every euro that our country earns net by trading with foreign countries can be attributed to the Dutch dairy sector. The NZO also states that the sector provides more than 45.000 jobs.

Favorable future?
Finally, the organization claims that Dutch dairy companies can continue to be a strong sector in the future. This is mainly due to the favorable climate, the strategic location in Europe and the increasing international demand for dairy.
