FrieslandCampina's takeover drive is striking. Data from Zenith Global shows that the dairy cooperative made the most acquisitions of all companies in the global dairy sector in 2018.
FrieslandCampina made a total of 2018 acquisitions and 4 acquisitions in 2. The contrast with previous years is enormous. In the period from 2015 to 2017, FrieslandCampina 'only' made 3 acquisitions, 2 of which were corporate takeovers. What is striking is that until December FrieslandCampina had only made 1 acquisition. Three acquisitions followed in a short time. The takeover drive is in line with the new strategy which FrieslandCampina launched in November.
The cooperative has taken over 3 distributors and 1 cheese producer. These include Best Cheese Holland and various foreign players. The 2 acquisitions concern a minority investment in Ethiopia and the purchase of the shares of the joint venture with Huishan Dairy† This last part took place in February 2018.
Lactalis, Arla and Emmi
French dairy giant Lactalis records 4 acquisitions, placing it in second place in the list. Arla Foods and Emmi also appear in the list. They each made 3 acquisitions in 2018.
In addition, a general list has been made with all companies in the 'food business'. FrieslandCampina is also in the leading group in this, together with Heineken, Coca Cola and Nestlé. The latter carried out the most company takeovers in 2018 (5 units).
