Canada removes milk from the Wheel of Five

24 January 2019 - Tim Roetman - 16 comments

The Canadian government has been making the 'Food Guide' for many years, which can be compared to the 'Wheel of Five'. For the first time in the history of this nutrition guide, dairy is barely mentioned in the guidelines for a healthy diet.

The government in Canada has for years emphasized that dairy is essential to a healthy diet. This was also the case in the penultimate update. However, as of January 2019, dairy products no longer play an important role in a healthy Canadian diet.

The change is causing great frustration among Canadian dairy farmers. They claim (based on scientific research) that dairy is actually very healthy. This keeps the bones healthy and prevents certain chronic diseases, according to the dairy farmers. The Canadian dairy farmers' representative (Dairy Farmers of Canada) says the new version is not in line with recent research on the health aspects of dairy.

less meat
In addition, meat proteins are also largely replaced by vegetable proteins. "It's important for people to understand that vegetable and animal proteins are not 1:1 interchangeable," said Mary Ann Binnie, nutrition manager at the Canadian Pork Council (the swine industry advocate).

Rick Bergmann, the chairman of the Canadian Pork Council, also expresses his concerns about the renewed plan. "We are particularly concerned that Canadian consumers will see the new Food Guide as a recommendation to eat less meat and replace it with vegetable proteins."

Vegans are pleasantly surprised
It goes without saying that the various vegan organizations are delighted with the update of the nutritional advice. The Canadian government currently recommends a diet that consists of 88% vegetable proteins.

I expected more common sense from a country like Canada

Well Peter, also in Canada environmental freaks and vegans have more and more to crumble in the milk..... And you can see that their minds have already been affected......
Joris 24 January 2019
Both Joop and Peter have no idea about nutrition, just like the farmers in Canada. So maybe it would be good if a dietician like me gives an opinion about this, as I do.

Both advice from the Canadian government are correct and this type of advice will emerge in many more countries, partly because research shows that this is good for human health, but also for the environment.

It is important that they do not say that you can no longer take dairy, but that it does not belong in the basics and that is correct. This can be easily replaced.

Less meat is healthier, in the Netherlands there is also a maximum of 500 grams of meat per week, of which a maximum of 100 grams is processed. We have pretty much the same advice.

Just to be clear, I hate vegans and I don't think that age is healthy.

I am afraid that the "disc of five" or similar products are often fed by the powerful industry.

of course, and cannabis in it.....

and the infants? The first and only thing they get is milk.
And then just say that milk is not essential.
How stupid can scientists be?

What an awful swagger, really no one looks at the disc of five. I regularly come to Canada, the disc of less fat in my body would fit better there.

The human brain started to develop by eating meat, now it is clearly the other way around for some.

Whether there is anyone who lets the government prescribe what you eat.

and man alone is the only mammal that has adapted to long-term drinking of milk. Name me animals that continue to drink milk after infancy?
peter 27 January 2019
@Erik, you have several suckler cows that still drink from another cow as a cow, too bad you don't know that yet. hereby!

The countries where the most milk is drunk also have the most people with osteoporosis.

In Canada they like milkshakes and they make you fat. Now I understand why they no longer prescribe milk
