Belgian dairy farmers are furious about Albert Heijn's decision to lower the price for a 1 liter carton of milk by €0,07. Several Belgian interest groups are also unhappy about the action.
Due to the price reduction, 1 carton of this milk costs €0,55 at Albert Heijn in Belgium. Compared to the Dutch price, which comes out at €0,87, this is a significant reduction. Interest representative Boerenbond calls the reduction unacceptable and requests Albert Heijn also to adjust the price. "Only then will there be economic sustainability for the dairy farmer," it said.
Lowest Price Guarantee
Hendrik Vandamme, chairman of the General Farmers' Syndicate (ABS), is angry at the supermarket's decision. "It's an outrageous price, and there's no good reason for it either. The prices on the markets are not falling, because milk prices are picking up again."
Vandamme is also afraid that other supermarkets will follow this choice. "This can create a knock-on effect, mainly due to the lowest price guarantee from many supermarket chains." He expects that in the long term this could even result in a declining milk price.
Albert Heijn has not yet responded to Boerenbond's request and has not yet released a general response.
