Sustainable dairy farmer gets an interest discount

30 January 2019 - Wouter Baan - 10 comments

Rabobank, FrieslandCampina and the province of Drenthe want to make dairy farming more sustainable together. The 3 parties will configure the sustainability agendas, so that cohesion is created. Rabobank is making €50 million available to dairy farmers who want to become more sustainable.

The ambition is to accelerate the sustainability of dairy farming. Dairy farmers who take concrete steps are rewarded with an interest discount. Together, the parties have set a point on the horizon, because in 2025 dairy farming must be a closed cycle as much as possible.

€50 million for (re)financing
Carin van Huët, the director of Food and Agri at Rabobank, says that €50 million is available for (re)financing in the field of sustainability. The biodiversity monitor, which was partly developed by the World Wildlife Fund, is leading in the allocation of the budget. Based on the score on the monitor, the interest discount can rise to a maximum of 0,5% per year over a period of 5 years.

The province of Drenthe is also contributing and has released a subsidy of up to €7.500 per company. Dairy farmers who wish to claim these funds must take steps in areas such as grazing, land-relatedness and emission limitation.

Ministry is content
Frans Keurentjes, the chairman of the FrieslandCampina cooperative, says he is pleased that other parties will also be rewarding sustainability steps in dairy farming. The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality calls the initiative a concrete step towards circular agriculture.

Rabobank what are you meddling in, just start financing and leave the rest to the entrepreneur. You could have used that 50 million to finance more flexibly and to give the entire sector an interest rate advantage.

Seems quite hypocritical of Rabobank to me, in the Ukraine they just invest in battery cages

Fortunately, most cows are kept indoors in those large spacious stables. They took care of the big weather differences. When we see that the cows cannot enter and that they are all lying in front of the wire in front of the barn. Often in the mud when it rains and when it is very hot . You don't do that to a cow! Then let the cow choose whether to stay inside or outside. So keep the door open. If one asks the question, is it better or worse for the cows to come out, then I think keeping the cows inside usually wins out. Let the farmer decide for himself in his circumstances. Then it is sustainable! Certainly not Rabobank!

Every dairy farmer works sustainably with a closed cycle, otherwise the manure accounting is not correct

Sorry again...

What is sustainable at all? Is there already a clear definition of requirements to meet this concept or is this tie arbitrariness? Are there still cattle farmers in Drenthe who still do mowing, silage and feeding with the horse? I think you are only sustainable then!

Fine RABOBANK, keep it up, we have to go to sustainable agriculture and whether you like it or not, we're going there there is no going back if we want to survive here

this is exactly what I have predicted for years, RABO AND FRIESLAND CAMPINA determine agricultural policy.
so the rest of the profit that the bank must and wants to make comes from the other livestock farmers, who then have to pay more interest, with the result that a large part of the applications for loans are rejected in advance.
rabo and friesland please remove the c from cooperative or else keep a fair vote what the members want

Why only dairy farming . There are also arable farmers in Drenthe.
