Milk production in the United Kingdom has risen to record levels in recent months. The milk supply in December 2018 amounted to 1,27 million tonnes, the highest point in 23 years.
Milk production in the United Kingdom was almost 7% higher than in December 2017, although milk supplies were exceptionally low in that month. Compared to the 5-year average, milk production was approximately 2018% higher in December 4.
Further increase expected
AHDB is also taking into account a similar increase in milk supply in Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland) for January. According to the organization, the growth of the milk lake is related to last summer's drought. This has created a shortage of roughage, forcing British dairy farmers to supplement the ration with concentrates. This boosts milk production.
The AHDB also expects that milk supply will remain relatively high until March. After that, everything depends on the weather conditions, the condition of the grass and whether the cows can go back into the meadow.
