Background FrieslandCampina

'I would think twice as a switcher'

Zuivelcoöperatie FrieslandCampina again saw many member dairy farmers leave in 2018. In addition, the company made less profit, so that the performance premium turns out rather meager. Nevertheless, the top of the company looks positively to the future.

De FrieslandCampina's annual figures are by no means rosy, as profits fell 10% to €203 million. As a result, the performance premium halved to a meager €0,46 per 100 kilos of milk. The company attributes the lower profit, among other things, to the relatively high guaranteed price; on average it came to €36,05 per 100 kilos.

Year of the transition
Hein Schumacher, the CEO of FrieslandCampina, describes 2018 as a year of transition; a fresh start after a few difficult years. Last year, the dairy cooperative launched a new strategy, but the first fruits are not yet reaped. "The transformation within FrieslandCampina will take at least 24 months", the CEO emphasized during the presentation of the annual figures. "Yet the profit has to be increased in 2019."

In Germany, the group has made a clean sweep and almost 90% of the organization has been renewed; the results are quite disappointing. The head office has since been moved to Düsseldorf and 1 German dairy has been closed. These interventions should eventually turn the tide, but Schumacher sees Germany as a difficult market. In general, the CEO desires more and better product innovations.

It is not obvious that sales to China will boost profitability. The cooperative is large in the Chinese market in baby milk powders, but sales are under pressure. "Competition has increased, with around 2018% fewer babies being born in 12. This will depress sales in the coming years." By investing extra in marketing, the company wants to maintain its leading position. "That's what we're fighting for," Schumacher said.

Less milk, better performance?
The company is looking for extra profit with the sale of branded dairy. That is why a number of acquisitions were made in 2018 that should give the cooperative more clout. "The upward trend has resumed from the second half of 2018," emphasizes the company's top management. 'Coincidentally' the milk supply clearly shows a decrease from that period. Frans Keurentjes, chairman of the cooperative, says there is no connection between the declining milk supply and the turnaround in performance. This does not alter the fact that there seems to be a correlation.

FrieslandCampina collected 10,3 billion kilos last year. According to Keurentjes, 3 to 4 billion kilos of this are still loss-making. "However, you have to see the ratio in context to the high guaranteed price that we pay out. That does not alter the fact that our profitability has to increase. It is an illusion, however, that the loss-making volume will be reduced to 0 in the future," says Keurentjes.

I can't estimate whether the member turnover has stopped now

Henry Schumacher

High member turnover
Just like in 2017, FrieslandCampina again saw many members leave in 2018. Of the 603 departed dairy farmers 340 went to another dairy group. The rest is a stopper. Schumacher does not want to say what an acceptable annual turnover of members is. He cannot estimate whether the outflow of grumbling members has now stopped. "I can't get into the minds of the dairy farmers what they are going to do." The CEO emphasizes that FrieslandCampina (as the largest dairy cooperative) really has something to offer its members. "As a dairy farmer I would think twice before switching to another dairy."

The loss of members can hardly be attributed to the milk price of FrieslandCampina. "We pay the highest milk price of all cooperatives", claims CFO Jaska de Bakker. She says that this is also the ambition for the coming years. The stayers will probably have to warm up to sustainability. Schumacher: "We want to take a leading position in terms of sustainability and we also reward our dairy farmers extra for this."

give the time
The aftertaste of the press conference is that FrieslandCampina is asking for at least another year for recovery. The coming years will show whether the pride of the Dutch dairy sector can actually increase profitability and stop the turnover of members. If the new strategy is successful, FrieslandCampina will show a strong recovery. If not, there are no more excuses.

I would think twice not to do it. If you see what the requirements will be in the near future, I wonder if we will manage with 2 or 1 cents. And then also go into business with parties that for years and still make us black in the media

What a fake message above, I think the CONO has been paying the highest price for years in a row
jw 28 February 2019
arrogance at its best pay the best milk price of all. that is far too low given all the extra requirements they set at rfc. and European ones are not even at the top. they just don't get it right. and now with the left-wing green mafia. if it has to come from there can stop

Why is that carton of fc chocolate and coffee milk twice as expensive in the store than the jumbo house brand. I would expect that a farmer for meadow milk and all points would also receive twice as much for his efforts, but apparently it ends up somewhere else and not with the real sustainable people. I wish you a pleasant flying holiday

I feel pressured now. Think I'm going to switch now. The attitude alone: what an arrogance. And back payment is almost 0!
Ard Eshuis 1 March 2019
Hope for many switchers and that they will get better... What arrogance and that going into business with the activists of Natuurmonumenten, phew!

This once again confirms our decision! Despite the 200 hokus pokus focus planet points, we certainly did not feel that appreciation for ourselves as an entrepreneur... on the contrary! The above confirms that it was better for us to leave!

The fact that Campina has to dump almost half of the milk below cost is really a lot. They probably don't mind a few less farmers
peter 1 March 2019
They need to hire some more crappy staff (pen lickers, checkers, invent new rules, etc.). and keep even more out of sales and award themselves more bonus. The MEMBERS COUNCIL is also filling its pockets and keeping its own sheep on the dry side at the expense of the collective. They are making more and more rules to pay less milk money to dairy farmers, so they still want to earn money on the backs of the members instead of making an effort to earn it in the market. time and again they put members in front of the cart and they increasingly want to suck their own members out!!!

-Taking free flow from members for milk transport.
-continuing to spend millions on the new milk web (deterioration
for members) and ICT.
- increasing (dismissal) bonuses even more in bonus as an average farm is worth.
- stop with the foqus shit and fire half of the staff and start WORKING, as we already do 24 hours a day!!!!!!

Schumacher: "We want to take a leading position in terms of sustainability and we also reward our dairy farmers extra for this."

The sustainability competition goes on...... Once started by the Cono, there is still no end insight! It is becoming more and more unworkable on the farms with rules and meddling.

There is no end to it and with Natuurmonumenten a new focus has been added to FC.
The next step will therefore be that FC takes over the Cono cheese makers, there is no shortage of money and we simply want to have the leading position....

FR the biggest farmers killer first with their 1000 mini fermenters now lying down again with a nature monument and the cour bisnis what they have to do for the farmer, valorize milk for the highest possible price they no longer get around to what they are with other things in process. We feel badly cheated by people who claim to be an economist, it is better to appoint a farmer as director.
ice cream 2 March 2019
sustainability, is the veil to cover the bad performance in the market, because they are still losing market share, profit and sales are falling, 1 year more delay for recovery why? yes, then they can continue muddling along for another year! there is too much scum that is chasing farmers and the supervisory board should protect farmers for that and send them out, but nothing could be further from the truth, they keep their heads shut so that they can collect another 100 euros for another year ( self-enrichment) a pity that the Members' Council does not intervene! frans keurentjes is like may in Great Britain everyone pull into the abyss.
Next year, merge with arla, and the supervisory board and the chief executive go home! now they still want if we wait a long time then they think check it out!
If the management and the supervisory board are as good as they say, then they were not so arrogant! and were they modest and then I could envy them

nothing could be further from the truth poor result always depends on someone else
the currencies
the high warranty price
the milk supply
the decrease in consumption
Others have to deal with this kind of thing too
just be honest we are not good enough! and we have too high costs.
Must be the last year that they can pay the performance surcharge, next year they can be happy if they get the guaranteed price!
M curious! good luck!

We probably owe the love to that left-wing rascal Wiebe, this is not going to help.
The supervisory board is just one of the rivers that are of no use to us as southerners either she is there for the money and not for the members from the south she does not understand that there are also farmers who have to work hard to make their head tremble water .The whole board from top to bottom has butter on its head there is no honest word about what is going on there are no polls what the members think about it and there is no feedback on how the district council has voted while holding our are representatives in our district we have nothing to do with it Jean Paul thinks we should not know anything about anything what he thinks we should agree.
