Snow shuts down US milk collection

4 March 2019 - Wouter Baan

Heavy snowfall in the US state of Minnesota has disrupted infrastructure. The result is that the milk can no longer be collected from many dairy farmers, various American media report.

In the North American state of Minnesota, at the end of February, almost 1 meter snow temperatures will remain well below freezing in the coming days. The snow has done a lot of damage; several roads have been damaged and roofs of dairy barns have also collapsed. Moreover, many roads are impassable, so that the milk can no longer be collected.

Lucas Sjostrom, director of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association, estimates that more than 1.000 dairy farmers are being forced to dump the milk. Minnesota is a medium-sized dairy state with just under 3.500 dairy farms.

The dairy sector in several other US states, such as Wisconsin (which borders Minnesota), also suffers a lot from the heavy snowfall.
