Arla has announced new measures to reduce CO . emissions2 to counteract. The Scandinavian cooperative aims to reduce CO . by 20502- work neutrally. Emissions should be reduced by 10% in the next 30 years.
With the goals, Arla aims to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement, which has been signed by 174 countries. Arla has calculated the climate impact of the production and this shows that each liter of milk produces 1,15 kilos of CO .2 cares. Both the dairy farm and the emissions during processing were considered.
Decreasing emissions
Since 2013, Arla has surveyed almost 700 dairy farms and also made recommendations for CO . on those farms2-reduction. Emissions have been falling for some time, the company reports. Since 2005, the CO . has decreased2emissions from transportation, processing and packaging at Arla by 22%. Arla's dairy farmers also have a decrease in CO2emissions achieved: 1 liter of milk now provides 24% less CO2emissions than in 2005.
In many cases, these measures also resulted in cost savings. In 2018, Arla set up a database in which 96% of the milk pee is monitored. The next step is to link this data to the CO2emissions. Dairy farmers who make data available receive a premium on top of the milk price.
Reducing Methane Emissions
The dairy cooperative also wants to reduce methane emissions, partly through the feed composition. Since methane is formed during the digestion of the feed, it is impossible to stop this process. On the other hand, there are feed types that cause more or less emissions. Arla sees opportunities for methane reduction in this area.
