Although it is still quiet on the feed market, the red numbers are increasing. The straw price showed a decrease last week for the first time in a long time, but the straw price cannot escape a negative change this week too. Has the free fall of the price started?
The straw price fell last week with €5 to €140 per tonne free at farm. This week the price drops in the same order of magnitude to €135 per tonne free at farm. According to the forage traders, this is mainly because more supply has become available, while demand has actually decreased slightly. It is even expected that the price could fall even further in the coming weeks, provided that the sentiment remains the same on the market.
The straw price is not the only price that has succumbed to the pressure, because the price for spent grain has also fallen. The price will drop this week by €0,05 to €2,55 per percent dry matter. There is little demand for the product, while the supply has been stable for some time.
Balance in supply and demand
This applies to the other products the trade is mainly fueled by a balance between supply and demand. As a result, the price of meadow hay is still €240 per tonne free of charge and the price for silage maize remains stable at €60 per tonne free of charge.
